Todd Mall Precinct
The cultural program at Parrtjima’s Alice Springs Desert Park precinct is complemented by a second event precinct at Todd Mall, in Alice Springs CBD, also home to an array of restaurants, bars, galleries and retail stores.
Located in Alice Springs CBD, the Todd Mall precinct will showcase stunning lighting effects along the mall and a new installation representing the language of Moths . The lights will be on between 6:30pm and 10:30pm each night.
The central lawn will also be home to nightly creative workshops, film and musical performances as part of the Knowledge Program.
As well as installations and the Knowledge Program, Parrtjima will continue to shine lighting effects along the pavement of Todd Mall, incorporating Arrernte words to educate and inspire.
At the request of the Arrernte people and to complement the Caterpillars and Moths, the lighting effects will honour another ancestral being for Mparntwe – the Stink Bug.
THE LANGUAGE OF MOTHS
Angkentye Akngarte-iwelheme-akerte (Language of Cycles Turning Over)
Arrernte people asked Parrtjima to work with independent artists to create this new installation following the popularity of a 2018 installation that celebrated Caterpillars and their importance to the landscape and creation time of Australia’s Red Centre and beyond. At the request of Arrernte advisors’, a series of sculptured large-scale moths will decorate Todd Mall, among incredible lighting effects, providing another layer to the story of Country and the Arrernte relationship to the physical and spiritual world.
The moths were designed at a workshop with The Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education.
