Caterpillars and Arrernte Culture
Parrtjima is representing Caterpillars in Todd Mall, as requested by the group of Arrernte people guiding and advising the Festival. This group chose Caterpillars to show respect for country, respect for the vast network of people who hold Dreamings that cross through here (which go beyond Caterpillar) and show the deep connection that Arrernte have with this place.

We are the group of Arrernte people who have been guiding and advising Parrjtima, helping to make it right, proper and true for this place.
The group knows it can't speak for anyone outside itself, and gives respect to other people who also hold these Dreamings.

People have always gathered here. This area has always been an important place for ceremony and a significant waterhole for tribes travelling through.
Lots of Dreamings come through this area, and people know how they are connected to this place through those Dreamings. The Dreamings represented in Todd Mall link Arrernte people together, and they link Arrernte people to many other tribes as well – from every direction, all the way from South Australia, Western Australia and the East. We want to show that by everyone keeping their culture, we are keeping important connection alive, right across the country.
We hope you can understand that in our Dreamings, there is deep knowledge that has guided us to travel and connect across the country for a very long time. Now you are joining us as part of that.

You can only properly know a story if you are the right person to know about it – if you are connected to it properly.
We can't show you everything about the Dreamings. We are only showing public things. Only people with the right to know about each Dreaming can know the deeper parts.
But we can help you see that these important Dreamings exist, in this place and inside of us. Mwantyele arntarnte-areme: show respect and care for them.
There are people in this group who are properly connected to Caterpillar Dreamings. People have other connections, too, like the Butterflies, Stink Bug and Eagle and lots of others. But we chose to show Caterpillars this time. On behalf of themselves and their families, people in this group want Caterpillars here to show Arrernte first in this place, and feel proud.
Arrernte people are deeply connected to this place and its Dreamings. They have always been here and always will be. We hope you can feel that.
It is very important to the Arrernte group guiding and advising Parrtjima that the Caterpillars have been painted by appropriate people.
The group who painted the Caterpillars has asked to be called Parrtjima Arrernte Artists.
